Drafts of Back to the Future show the character with the middle initial of "H", but this detail was omitted in further revisions.Īs the October 2015 date featured in the films approached, media outlets began noting the similarities between the older version of the character and Donald Trump, who at the time Part II was produced had just purchased the Plaza Hotel in New York City and, by 2015, was in the midst of an ultimately successful run for President of the United States. Tanen accused the two of attempting to produce an antisemitic work with their 1978 film, I Wanna Hold Your Hand. The character is named for studio executive Ned Tanen following an incident years earlier where Tanen reacted aggressively to a script being pitched by the film's writers Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis.

The alternate 1985 reveals that Lorraine, widowed after the murder of George McFly, ended up marrying Biff in 1973 so that her children could live a better life. In the original 1985, Biff's marital status is unknown as no mention of a wife was ever made in the trilogy. In 1955, Biff coveted Lorraine Baines who did not return the sentiments. Biff had been living with his grandmother, Gertrude Tannen, at 1809 Mason Street for some time by November 1955. Strickland, revealed later that Biff's family is in bad terms with his principal's since the feud between his great-grandfather and Marshall James Strickland. The only person at Hill Valley High School that Biff was afraid of was Mr. Feared by most of his schoolmates, he was less brave without his gang ( Match, Skinhead, and 3-D). Rather than studying in high school, he was depicted as preferring to bully George McFly into doing his homework for him while he drank and hung out with his friends.

He is the great-grandson of Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen, son of Irving “Kid” Tannen and grandfather of Griff Tannen. Although he still has mixed feelings about the McFly family, Biff’s interference helps give Marty, Gigawatt and the other heroes the necessary advantage to stop Rumble and make sure the future remains unwritten.Character portrayal Biff's early life and nature īiff was born in Hill Valley, California. It’s a surprising change considering fans have seen Biff content with manipulating the timeline or even committing murder for his own benefit. But once inspired by Marty, this version of Biff finally chooses to do what’s right, standing up to the Decepticons’ evil and making sure he doesn’t contribute to the downfall of mankind. Biff has been portrayed as self-centered and willing to do whatever is necessary to get ahead - as is seen again when he betrays Doc and the McFly family to win favor with the Decepticons. The Transformers/Back to the Future crossover sees him forced to work for the bad guys, putting up with similar forms of ridicule and belittlement to those he has imposed on others. In Back to the Future, Biff is seen as an unapologetic bully who eventually gets what’s coming to him. Marty wakes up to find a decimated Hill Valley in 1985 where the remaining humans are overseen by Commander Tannen. Forcing Biff to work for him, Rumble is able to find and awaken Megatron earlier in the timeline, allowing him to kill his longtime nemesis Optimus Prime and arrange the Decepticons' successful takeover of Earth. But in Transformers/Back to the Future, Biff is visited by a time-traveling Decepticon named Rumble, who has stolen Doc Brown’s DeLorean and traveled back to 1974. Biff’s grandson Griff and his ancestor Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (both likewise depicted by Wilson) were similarly antagonistic to the McFly family through time, ultimately put in their place thanks to the time-traveling interference of Marty McFly. George famously laid Biff out with one punch, which resulted in profound changes to their future lives. Wilson, Biff Tannen bullied George McFly until Marty traveled back in time and encouraged the man who would become his father to stand up for himself.
